I saw your post about running in LI. I grew up there and ran the Divas Half Marathon in 2010. Boring course (flat, though) but really fun race. I recommend! If I am in LI and need to do a long run, I go to Eisenhower Park. The perimeter of the park is about 6 miles, and there are plenty of paths in the park itself. If you're looking for trails, you might want to try the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail. It runs through my hometown and I never knew about it. Not sure about safety, but it's probably OK. There is also a trail that runs along the Wantagh Parkway, both paved and in the woods (the paved part goes under bridges, otherwise just cross streets at the bridges). I used to run along the parkway for cross-country practice. I think the paths run the entire length of the parkway. Sunken Meadow State Park has trails ... used to run cross-country meets there. Lemme tell you about how much I love Cardiac Hill. No, really, it is so steep you can almost reach out and touch the ground. Thankfully, it's only about 200 yards long, but it is brutal. I would imagine most of the state parks have trails. My dad did a summer race series a long time around that was in a different park every week.
I ran the Ho Ho Ho Holiday 5K in Bethpage in December a few times. That one is always fun.
HTH!
