Anyone come back from PF "quickly"?

I know it's all relative, I'm just hoping to get back soon!  I've been having heel pain since the beginning of February - went to the ortho today and he said PF, but that I should be ok to start running again after a dose of corticosteroids (6 days).  I've only run 3 miles since a half at the end of February and have another half at the end of April.  Am I foolish to even be thinking of doing the one in April?

Re: Anyone come back from PF "quickly"?

  • I'm still "recovering" from PF - non-typical with arch vs. heel pain.  I wasn't given any meds, but I am doing ice (rolling my foot with a froze water bottle), stretches, and orthotics.  I also wasn't told to take any time off from running, but I've only done 2 runs so far.  In my situation, I could probably run a half by the end of April, but it will really depend on how you respond to your treatment.

  • I think PF is one of those things that you manage, not cure.

I'd rethink the half in April.  Sorry.

You're absolutely right and I've come to that conclusion as well.  Now I have my eyes on the MCM half at the end of May and if that's a no go, I'll wave off till the fall (I don't do well with the heat in the summer).

  • are you able to run at all now?  I'd be nervous about committing to something at the end of may too. I tend to be conservative though.  what does your MD say?

you don't want to irritate the PF right when you get it under control.   seems like training for a half in 8-10 weeks coming off of a 4 week running hiatus might be too much too soon.  be gentle.

fwiw, I've never had PF.  this is just general over-use injury type advice.

  • I've only run once since the half 3 weeks ago.  I *can* run, it just doesn't feel great afterwards.  I'm going to wait to sign up until I can gauge my general fitness and how my foot feels for sure - no need to toss more race fees down the drain, but I want to at least give myself something to "train" for.  I may just end up doing a 5K or something shorter that I don't have to train as long for (time wise or mileage wise).  Doc said I would be "ok" to ramp back up to normal mileage (~20 miles / week) after this round of steroids, but I'll definitely take it slowly so as not to re-aggravate.
