Nothing in crate

Anyone else's dog stay in an empty crate? Daisy gets a bone and that's it. She eats everything.

Re: Nothing in crate

  • We were (still are I guess) very inexperienced when it came to having a puppy.  Even more so with crate training (both of us had dogs before but never in a crate.)

Some how we lucked out.  We didn't know better and our 5 month old bulldog has always had a bed, blanket and soft toys in his crate.  He has never once destroyed anything.   Early on he peed a couple of times, but hasn't done that in a while.  He has a thing for sleeping on cushy things, so I guess he figured out destroying his bed would not be a good idea.

From day 1 he has always preferred to chew on hard things like metal, wood and bones. So it could be that.

  • I only leave a stuffed kong and a hanging water dish in his crate.  He prefers the metal crate pan to a bed and I don't want to leave stuffed toys in case he would chew them.

  • I layer 2-3 towels in the crate, but nothing else.  Sometime she bunches them all in the corner and sleeps on directly on the pan - especially if it's warm out.

  • Bella just graduated to getting a blanket in her crate.  Before that we couldn't trust her not to destroy it.  She also gets a water bowl that attaches to the side and a kong or other safe toy to keep her occupied.
  • For the first probably year and a half of my dog's life she had nothing in her crate. She has since graduated and can have a nice bed and toys and stuff but she would shred anything we put in there when she was young. We tried towels and she ate them and the strings were obviously not digestible and it made her poop follow her around. It was quite scary for her.
