Q about picking bath/shower fixtures

My contractor said to pick something out and he'll pick it up. But I'm having a hard time finding one that has a handheld showerhead that isn't uber expensive. Are these typically not sold in sets? Do I need to find a whole set and then replaced with a preferred showerhead? That seems like such a waste. Or can I purchase everything separately? The tub spout, the handle, etc.

I could only do a little research before Lowes went down for maintenance and HD has to have the worst website ever. What am I missing on how this works? lol

Re: Q about picking bath/shower fixtures

  • I just did this and had the same confusion as you. Apparently, yes, most people buy the full set that they like (with a basic shower head), then buy a separate fancy shower head (with the handheld unit). I chose not to do that, however, and I bought this set (link) and have been happy with it so far (but it's only been a few weeks). Lowes only had one set in the store with a handheld unit (and only in certain finishes), so your selection is definitely limited in store, which is why I ordered online.

If you're just upgrading the parts that physically show (the trim), you can buy everything separately. In that case -- buy the fancy handheld you like -- I bought this one (link) -- then just the trim for the handle (and tub spout, if it's a tub/shower combo). The trim is in a separate part of the store than the full sets of tub/shower stuff -- I had to ask someone at the store to show me where that is. And, the selection of trim is pretty basic (and not very spectacular-looking).

If you're not sure if you need the full set vs. just the trim, ask your contractor if he needs the rough-in (that's a part that goes inside the shower wall, and is a bit more complex to install than just the trim). Most of the time, the sets you buy at HD/Lowes have the rough included, but I noticed quite a few online that just told you the rough you needed and you had to order it separately.

    HTH!

  • You can mix and match if you desire. For instance, I have a Danze mixing/control valve & thermostatic control, with a Toto handheld & tub spout, & a Brizo rain-shower head.  I wouldn't mix & match your valve controls though.

It's probably cheaper though to buy a complete set.
