My Grandma is Brilliant!!
I was telling her how we needed to trim Kiki's nails again because she was beginning to scratch everything (including our laundry basket of all things). Well, my grandma used to own cats and suggested I put catnip on Kiki's scratch post!!! I was like huh... that's a really good idea. Lo and behold, Kiki LOVES it! And, I love it because she's not ruining everything at out house!

How old is Sherlock? One out of our 4 cats isn't a fan of catnip (it actually works as a deterrent for her), but the other three didn't like it until they were 9 months to a year old.

Have you tried cat mint? It's a little different. Cat likes it substantially more.

Get the fresh stuff - a plant, if you can find one. Then pick some leaves, cut them up with your kitchen shears, and put them down. If he doesn't go for it, then I have no other suggestions.
See if you can find some valerian root from a local health food store or someplace. I once knew a cat break into a cupboard and several layers of paper/plastic to get to it. It wouldn't hurt to find some to rub on the cat post.
