I signed up for my 1st 5k

Im so excited! It's this Sunday and it's down by the beach so it should be a pretty course. The race starts at 7 am what time should I be there by? And does anyone have any tips for my first time?

Re: I signed up for my 1st 5k

  • Congrats! 5k racing is a lot of fun.

What time you should get there will depend on a couple of things,

    1. How big is the race (how many runners)? For BIG (2k+) races I always get there 30-45 minutes early to figure out where the start is, warm up, get lined up and so forth. For smaller races I think 30 minutes would be sufficient, just plan on parking if you anticipate issues.

    2. Are you planning on warming up at the race site (always do some sort of warm up to prevent injury)? If so then plan on an extra 15 minutes.

As for tips... listen to your body, let yourself get caught up in the energy of the crowd, and just enjoy your first race! Be careful.... it's addicting! Make sure to come back and let us know how it went!

  • Congrats, that's great!

How many people are running it?  How early you should be there depends on how big the race is.

If it's a smaller race, where I know it will be easy to park, etc, I try to get there 30-40 minutes early just so I can park, go to the bathroom etc.  If it's a big race, I would get there at least an hour or so early to account for traffic, bathroom lines, etc.

As for this being your first, just relax, have fun and enjoy the experience.  Don't get too wrapped up in your time, it's an automatic PR no matter when you cross that line.  If you're slower, line up towards the middle to back of the pack so the faster runners don't have to try to get around you.  If you have to stop to walk, don't just abruptly stop in the middle of the course, pull over to the side then slow down.  I can't tell you how many people I've almost tripped over who have done this.

Also, and this is probably most important, try not to go out too fast!  There will be a lot of excitement at the start and everyone will go fast in the beginning, but just try to stay at whatever your correct pace is.  A good many of those folks will crash and burn by mile 2, but if you stick to your own pace the whole time you can finish strong.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

  • Congratulations!  I always get to races an hour early but I hate being late or running into some issue like traffic then having to rush.  Gives me time to find parking, a bathroom and where I need to go.

    Have fun!

  • Congrats!!!!!!

Everyone else has already given great advice. Enjoy the race!
