I don't get...

People who drink hot beverages with a straw. I see people jamming straws into the lids of coffee cups and sipping away. Doesn't the straw melt?

Re: I don't get...

  • ewww, you would think it would melt!

I can only assume it's because they cannot drink out of the regular lid without spilling on themselves.

Thank you , Erin! I'm glad I'm not the only one! These folks need a sippy cup then. Stick out tongue

  • The entire idea of this is grossing me out for some reason!

I know! It's an epidemic here, though. They are abusing straws!

  • I see that a lot too!  WTF?

I think some of them are environmentalists that ask for cold drinks in hot cups because they'd rather have paper than plastic...but I may have made that up to make myself feel better.  lol

It annoys me! I see it with DD cups and those are styrofoam...an environmetalist's nightmare! Plus the work they have to do to flatten the straw and push it through the narrow opening. It's lunacy. haha.

  • I'd think it would have to be super hot to melt the straw. It does seem like a good way to burn the roof of your mouth, though.
  • My great aunt used to do this all the time. I finally asked her about it, and she said that she couldn't have anything extreme hot or extreme cold touching her teeth, so sucking it through a straw prevented that from happening. Even with an explanation, it still seems insanely weird to me. And I agree, how does the straw not melt?

  • I think people do it to because they think it helps with staining your teeth. I don't drink coffee but I feel like I've heard that used as a reason for the straw.

  • Interesting Boo, very interesting!
  • I know some who do it, so the coffee doesn't stain their teeth.

  • People do it for a few reasons. 1. They are slobs.  2. they dont want to stain their teeth. 3. If it's a woman wearing lipstick keeps the lipstick on.

    Personally I dont get it.

So, are people doing this with red wine, too?

I will  LMAO if I ever see someone drinking red wine thru a straw so their teeth don't stain.

::shyly raises hand:: I've done this. Not to keep the wine off my teeth, but I've drank wine through a straw.

  • You'd think that if the lid doesn't melt when touched by the hot liquid, the straw wouldn't melt either.  I realize that the lid isn't in constant contact with the hot liquid the way the bottom of the straw would be but there is a big difference between the temperature at which plastic softens vs. the temperature at which it melts.]

With that said, I think this issue is probably related to the fact that some people cannot handle very hot and cold liquids touching their teeth while others may be more prone to dripping coffee/tea staining their shirt so using a straw is just what they do to avoid that when they're at work.

  • Val, don't plastic straws seep chemicals into the drink? Straws are meant for cold drinks, not hot ones. Plastic lids are made for hot liquids.

I usually just drink straight from the bottle.

  • I drink all of my beverages through a straw. Embarrassed

I have sensitive teeth so anything too hot or cold really irritate them.
