Protein bars?

I'm trying to find a good protein bar for an afternoon or mid-morning snack. I'm about to change positions at work and my days are going to get more hectic with less at-my-desk time. Right now I've been loving Greek yogurt as a snack (Atlanta Fresh Vanilla non-fat; 6oz, 140 cal and 15 grams of protein).

I'm thinking a protein bar might be my only hope of a more portable snack with similar protein. Right now I occasionally eat Kashi Go Lean bars (~150 cal, 8 gr protein) or Clif Kid bars (~130 cal, 3 gr protein).

I know there are better things out there as far as protein bars go... any suggestions? (I'm open to other non-bar but easily-portable ideas as well.) My one restriciton is that it can't have almonds in the first few ingredients. I'm "almond intolerant" or somesuch thing that results in horrible stomach cramps after eating them.

Re: Protein bars?

  • Going by taste, my favorite protein bar is the Cookie Dough Balance Bar - it's 210 calories with 15g protein. It's delicious. However I've mostly stopped eating them because I've found that they don't fill me up - if I'm hungry for a snack, I can eat 2 without noticing and still be hungry. I think it's the lack of fiber in them.

Clif Builder's Bars are also quite tasty but more filling. They're 270 calories with 20g protein, which is kind of big, but it's perfectly reasonable to eat half of one if you're looking for a smaller snack. They also come in like 9 flavors, though you'll want to avoid the vanilla almond one. (Strangely enough, I'm also some sort of "almond intolerant" - I haven't been officially diagnosed, but almonds are on my list of foods that make the insides of my ears "itch" and possibly mess with my stomach. Anyway, I avoid them too.)

Another option that's not a protein bar is some kind of meat jerky. I don't eat meat, but my fiance does and he often has snacks that are either entirely "meat candy" (as he calls it) or part trail mix with jerky added. He mostly eats turkey jerky, but presumably beef jerky is similar. It looks like you can have 12g of protein in 70ish calories in an ounce of jerky. The trick with having trail mix and/or jerky is portioning it out properly - it's really calorie dense, so a serving is pretty small, thus it's very easy to eat way too much then realize later just how much you ate. You can avoid this if you measure it at home and bring it in a bag or tupperware, etc.

  • Well, I'm slightly partial to Marathon Bars. I often eat an energy bar (10g protein, ~150-170cals) or a Smart Stuff bar (5g protein, ~130-140 cals) as my morning snack.

Could you have something like and apple or celery sticks with a few slices of cheese? Or maybe a PB-to-go cup if you want to keep it on the sweet side?

  • my straight up protein bars are from muscle milk - it's muscle milk light and it's the chocolate/peanut/carmel bar - I think it has 19 g of protein and 170 cal).

I also like the cliff mojo bar in peanut/pretzel - I don't remember the protein or cal numbers though.

  • Thanks for the recs! I'll buy a handful this weekend and give a few some trial runs next week.

I've been doing SO good about snacking at work this past year, and I'm so worried that this new gig is going to throw me off my game. It's already wrecking my 'wearing-jeans-to-work' ability and making me dress like a grown up. Blech. (Which, in turn, made me drop like $500 bucks in the past week buying new clothes because my suits were all a size 24 or 26 and I'm now a 16/18!)

  • I like the PowerCrunch bars, specifically the peanut butter fudge variety. It reminds me of those wafer cookies.

    200 calories, 15g protein, 10g carb.

  • I like Luna Protein, in particular chocolate peanut butter (190 calories, 12g protein, 19g carb).  It is gluten free, which is helpful to me.

I like the Clif builder bars, mentioned above, and also the original clif bars.

I like the Clif protein bars. I'm not sure if they contain Almonds. What about a regular Clif Bar or Luna Bar? Most of the Balance Bars are pretty good. The Chocolate Lara bar is ok (not a fan of other Lara bars).

I'll agree that Atlanta Fresh yogurt is amazing. I need to pick some up at WF today.
