I live in Florida and have a one story home. All of our living areas are tile-kitchen, living room, dining room. The bedrooms and office have carpet. Our carpet needs to be replaced soon and we are trying to figure out what to do. We were thinking of putting hardwood in the bedrooms instead of carpet. Would that look horrible to have mostly tile and then wood in the bedrooms? The tiled area is pretty large so we really can't afford to change that to wood right now.
Thanks for any help!
Re: Flooring question
I think you can totally do wood in the bedrooms. I'm a carpet hater, so anytime you're talking about replacing carpet with a solid surface I'm all about it. Plus wood usually lasts longer and is easier to clean. I'd do it.
This.
Where I live a lot of the main areas (kitchen DR) are tile and the bedrooms are wood.
Thanks for the replies! I really didn't want to put carpet back in the rooms. One of my son's doctors said to get rid of the carpet too because of dust, toxins etc. because of his allergies. Now to start the search for wood...
Thanks again!
Carpet in the bedrooms will work or put tile and use area rugs for the warmth.
I'm from FL and now live in the northeast where wood is the norm. I would worry about the humidity and its affect on the wood since it can expand or shrink with moisture and temperature changes. You might want to consider laminate or a porcelain tile that looks like wood (some on this board have very nice bathrooms and kitchens with this type of tile). Tile is also good for keeping the house cool.
My mom has mostly tile and laminate wood in the bedrooms and it looks fine.
This is exactly why we just replaced our downstairs carpeted areas with wood. My son has bad allergies and his doctor recommended it (pediatrician recommended it but allergist said it wouldn't help - which I found interesting). Anyway, we had five rooms carpeted (playroom, dining, master bedroom, office and living room). Everything else downstairs was tile. The tile and the hardwood look great together. I am so happy with our decision, which was a costly, wise one.

In two weeks (or so) we will have engineered hardwood installed in our three bedrooms, living room and dining room and I can't wait to be rid of our carpet!
