Thinking of trying henna on my hair

I'm natural blond. I've done red before, and it looks totally natural on me (pale skin, freckles, greenish-blue eyes). I've been thinking about doing it again but have been reluctant because it's so expensive to maintain it, it fades so fast, and the roots look so crappy when it grows out a bit. I went back to blond last time because I just couldn't stomach the 4-6 week touch ups all the time. I was a student then and had no money.  But besides henna being a lot cheaper it is supposedly so great for your hair too, making it super soft and silky.

I'm nervous about the mess. I'm nervous about hating the color and then having to grow it out. I want a natural lighter red, not a totally bright red.

Anyone used henna before?  I ordered some samples of a few colors and am going to "strand test" to see if there is a shade I like. Just wondering if any other blonds have ever done this before?

  • Did you post this question while ago? I think I responded to a similar post a few weeks back.

Don't do the henna. I am from middle east and it is pretty common to use henna amongs the older generation (i.e. my grandma), and when I was growing up, amongst high school girls. First the color is very dull with no shine, second, it makes it very difficult to lift the color, or color over it, if you choose to go to a salon to do highlights or do something different with it or get it corrected.

Have you tried color depositing shampoos? Artec by Matrix used to have different ones, and my friend used the red over her natural blond and she would get a beautiful strawberry blond after a few washes.

  • Don't do it. I've seen a lot of ugly henna'd hair in Morocco.  It's nasty.

And my friend/business partner owns a salon.  She won't even try to correct someone's henna disaster.  She said nothing works well and that she just knows that the customer won't be happy.

No. But if you have the link to the thread, I'd love to read it.

You may have to go back a few pages, I couldn't find it. I think almost everybody said don't do it!

  • I'm surprised at the responses. My friend used henna to color her hair and it looked great - shiny, red tint.  Her hair was dark to begin with though. I never asked her how difficult it was. I can ask if you're interested though.
  • Yeah, that's why I was particularly curious about any blonds who have tried it. Because I believe results will be a lot more permanent than someone with dark hair who just gets a tint from it.

Kind of glad to hear some negative opinions, as I realized all I'd read on it so far was from very pro-henna sources, like a livejournal henna community and the reviews from people at a place that sells it.

I'm still undecided, but guess I'll try the test samples on some hair not attached to my head and see how that goes.
