Pottery Barn furniture - can it be re-finished?

I've been coveting a PB coffee table, but was not interested in the inflated price tag, esp since I didnt think PB was known for its highly exceptional quality.  However, it just popped up on my local CL for cheap.  Ad says it has some scratches on the surface.  WOndering if PB stuff is real wood and I could just sand and re-stain the top.

Thanks so much in advance!

  • My kid's furniture is not all real wood, just parts. I would pull it up online and read the specs.

Duh.  I was on the PB website and was looking under "Overview".  I just clicked "Dimensions and Care" and it says 'Tabletop is constructed of alder veneer over plywood'

Can I lightly sand and re-finish that???

    TIA!

  • Depending on how deep the scratches are and if they're just depressions/dings instead of tears through the wood itself, you can steam out some scratches.  If they're surface level, I'd imagine that a very light sand with super-fine sandpaper and then a re-coat of poly might help.

However, if they're deep or go through the veneer, you'll likely have to putty and paint, or remove the veneer and re-veneer (a royal PITA).
