Cooper has been doing great post-op, so great that I've taken him running a couple times...last night I took him running & we only went almost 4miles. He did great. We get home & while he patrolled the backyard I showered & ate, he finally came inside & laid down. The next time he got up was when I decided it was time for bed. He stood up & I see this HUGE swollen area on the inside of his knee But he stood up & walked on all 4's so I was semi-relieved. I let him out to potty & when he came in I iced him before bed & gave him his usual Deramaxx.
This morning when I got up it was still swollen so I iced him again, then we went for a walk & he again, was all good on all 4's. The swollen area felt warm to the touch, but he felt fine (temp-wise), he was acting himself & ate his bkfst (after the 1st surgery on this same side he developed an infection & the one thing that tipped me off was his lack of appetite, b/c the dog.likes.to.eat. Lol). What could I do but throw his cone back on him & go to work.
I called the Vet & explained everything, including his past issues w/this knee (this knee is destined to be the death of me!) & they made us an appt for today...thank god...For a multitude of reasons: 1. B/c I was really worried, 2. b/c DH is OOT for work (of course. everytime something happens to Coop DH is OOT) & Im freaking out alone 3. b/c this afternoon was the only time this week I could leave work early, which means if I wouldn't have gotten an appt today, I would have had to wait till Sat to bring him in
So, anyway, bottom line is that Cooper has a seroma. It was caused by our run (oh, the guilt! ). We are trying antibiotics 1st & if that doesn't work within 5-7 days, she will have to put a drain in
Anyway, Im trying not to let myself feel too guilty, so Im drinking beer & eating pizza. Cooper is fine...aside from the giant lump on the inside of his knee. Im just going to start praying.... DH will be home super late tomorrow night, so atleast he's not gone till Friday as usual....
Re: Dammit I spoke too soon, I jinxed us :(
Here are pics
Ohs nos!
Just remember, you were doing what you thought was best. If he wasn't feeling it, he could have just plopped down and had you drag him home. I also bet that he enjoyed every second of running and wouldn't change it!
Besides, more snuggles for everyone!
ETA. He must not be hurting if he's walking around on all legs! Don't knock yourself out, it's worse for you than him! He's probably thinking, "Oh, Mom! I'm fine! What's the big deal?!"
I don't know what Seroma is, but at least you caught it early? And if a round of antibiotics fixes it, then it sounds like it's not too bad?
I hope he's feeling better soon!
don't stress! there are MUCH worse things is could be.
Did they mention doing a pressure bandage? I know its a difficult area but that would be my suggestion. A seroma is like a hematoma without the blood cells. a lot of time pressure and ice help.
Thanks for the support ladies. Im trying not to think about it (the running) too much & just focus on resting (much to his dismay) & icing him (again, much to his dismay Lol)...& staying positive that the antibiotics will work so that she doesn't have to put a drain in
The Vet didn't mention anything about compression, thanks for the info!
Oh poor Coop!! I bet he had fun though and thinks you're an over reactive mom cuz "I'm fine geeze! I can even walk normal. See?" I know I get those looks from Ziva.
Just remember that you're doing the best you can and listening to what the vet says.
I'm not a vet, but I know all about human seromas (I work for an ortho) and while they are SCARY looking, they're usually not all that painful. So ... all that to say, Cooper's probably pretty comfortable, despite the giant lump. In people, at least, sometimes they'll just spontaneously go away on their own. So keep doing what you're doing - sounds like you've got it under control.
Fingers, paws, and claws crossed for Cooper to heal quick!
Thanks! I actually work for Ortho's too! Ha, small world. Im an xray tech, but I have learned a lot just working in this specialty. I asked around today & got the same info everyone has told me here & what I've read online, so that reassures me...a little.
Yeah, he seems fine, if anything its just irritating him, I've busted him a couple times licking at it. Just by coincidence he's been wearing his cone (DH has been OOT for 2 weeks & w/me being gone for 8-9 hrs a day, I didn't want him licking at his nearly healed incision all.day.long) so he can't get at it at all during the day. He's HATING having to be iced again...& not loving the short walks & leashed potty breaks..but what can ya do.
Atleast today it wasn't any bigger then before, so Im hoping...praying.....begging that all will be ok w/just the antibiotics.
Thanks again!
