Diabetic cookbook/recipes

My dad was just diagnosed as diabetic and he's having a hard time finding a way to cook food for himself and I wanted to get him a book or send him some recipes. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Diabetic cookbook/recipes

  • Sorry to heat that. Here's my low-carb tag for recipes.

I am sorry your Dad is facing this challenge.  I resource Joslin for diet and cooking ideas.   My mom has been living with Diabetes for a few years.  It is easily manageable by diet and medication.  One of the key things to learn is that carbohydrates can adversely impact a diabetic.   So you want larger portions of vegetables and smaller portions of starches.   I believe Joslin has a few cookbooks too.

  • My husband and my father-in-law are both diabetic.  I got them each "Just What the Doctor Ordered Diabetes Cookbook: A Doctor's Approach to Eating Well with Diabetes."  It was written by Joseph D'Amore, MD, an internist who was a chef before he went to medical school, and his sister, Lisa D'Amore-Miller who is a nutritionist.  My cousin was one of his patients which is how I found out about the book.  I think it's a very simple and realistic approach to managing diabetes with food.  It's worked well for us!

     Good luck!
