Running vs. Walking

Good Morning All!  My doctor has me on restricted exercise so I can't run for the next several weeks.  I took a long walk this morning instead of my normal run and was wondering if there was a website or some way to compare the number of calories I burn walking vs. running.  Anyone know if there is a way to compare them?  Any insight you have would be helpful.  TIA!

Re: Running vs. Walking

  • I don't have the specific answer to your question, but I saw your siggy and put 2 and 2 together why you aren't running.

My DD is an IVF baby and just wanted to let you know what I was able to do for exercise while going through that process.

I ran 8 miles the day after I started stims and then stopped running.  Throughout stims I did upper body weights the elliptical 30-40 minutes almost everyday (fyi I hate the elliptical but was a great way for me to get my heartrate up and still get a fairly decent workout in).  I never got super uncomfortable like I have heard many people getting though- perhaps the exercise helped?  I continued that routine the day after ER until ET.  Then I didn't do ANY sort of exercise between the time of ET until we saw the heartbeat at 6w0d. I then starting  slowly reincorporating all my normal exercise routines in and ended up running, doing high intensity workouts and lifting weights until the day my water broke at 40 weeks even.

I know you didn't ask for this info, but I was never able to find any information about working out during IVF and during an IVF pregnancy and just thought it might be helpful!!

Good luck!!! If you have any sort of questions I would be more than happy to help!

  • Thanks Jess.  This is really helpful.  We've come so far and have a long way to go that I'm almost afraid to do anything.  My RE said no running once I start stims which I'm supposed to start on Saturday.  The Lupron has just made me so incredibly tired that I don't have the energy right now to run.  I think I'm not feeling things as badly as some others might although next week might be a different story.  I want to keep some sort of exercise going for as long as I can and I wasn't sure if walking even came close to running in that respect.  We do have an eliptical at home so maybe I'll try doing that on the days I feel like doing more than running.  I don't love the eliptical either but I'm sure it will be better than nothing.

    Thank you so much again.

  • How about purchasing a heart rate monitor? That'll give you an accurate accounting of what you are burning when you go for a walk.
  • I usually just estimate 100 calories per mile for either walking or running - it's just that the walking miles take longer.  It's not quite right, because you do burn slightly more per distance running than walking, but it's a rough guide.

This is what I've always heard as well.
