My cookies are too crunchy...?

Good Morning All!  I made cookies last night and put them in a sealed plastic bag after they cooled.  I took them out this morning and they are all hard and super crunchy.  I mean more than they should be.  Like you could crack a tooth on them.  This seems to happen all the time to me when I bake cookies.  Am I doing something wrong do you think?  I've heard of the putting a piece of bread in with them to help but I didn't think I'd need to do that the very night I baked them.  Any thoughts?

  • Does a quick 30 sec in the microwave make them any softer? I know sometimes our cookies are softer and moister if we re-heat for a few seconds in the microwave.

  • I always underbake my cookies a bit and let them cool on the cookie sheet for a couple minutes.  You could try to put a piece of bread in with them that will help make them softer.  But it sounds like you may have baked them too long if they are crunchy.

This is what I was thinking.

  • Also check the temperature on your oven.  My old oven would say 350 degrees but when checked with an independent oven thermometer, it would be 372 degrees.  Until I figured it out, everything came out overcooked.

  • what is your recipe?  do you use brown sugar?

check out Alton Brown's recipes to compare what happens when you change up the ingrediants just a bit.  I like "The Chewy".

I don't have a link to the recipe.  It's got Nutella in it but no brown sugar.  I've had The Chewy before and had good luck with them. I have an oven thermometer but haven't paid much attention to it lately.  I'll look again and make a note on this recipe to cut the baking time.  Thank you all for your thoughts.
