Have you ever heard of Potcake dogs?

'Potcake' is the name given to the dogs of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. It came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to the dogs.

I don't remember where I ever heard of these dogs but I decided to look up this rescue today at work because I'm bored.  OMG.  The cuteness...I die!

Re: Have you ever heard of Potcake dogs?

  • I didn't know they had a name. In college I was on a tall ship and we docked in Bequia in the grenadines. They had a bunch of stray dogs on the tiny island and they were EVERYWHERE. In the bars, in the vendor tents, the post office, the airport, the police station lol. Everyone fed them and most of the time they hung out with tourists around the few hotels. They all looked just like little lab puppies and primarily yellow, black and chocolate. All roly poly and adorable. Every morning when we motored over to port from the ship there was a puppy waiting for you on the pier and it would follow you all day in and out of shops and sleep at your feet. They were really cute and fairly well cared for considering they were strays.
Jackson: I used to be wild, like the wolf, and now I'm reduced to posing in pink petals for your enjoyment. The joys of domestication
Poe: Here we go once again with the "I was a wild stray..." story. Blah blah blah *eye roll*

  • Daww, the babies!  They are so cute with their huge paws!

As a side note, I think that the rescue has a brilliant plan.  I didn't get to read much, but I hope they're also getting vets to the islands to spay/neuter the strays.  I've never been to any of those islands, but strays were a huge problem when I visited Belize.

  • My DH lived in Turks and told me about them.  He said they were everywhere.

  • This is so terrible, but I thought when you said they feed them the remnants of the cooking pot, I thought you meant marijuana :/ I was SO sad for these little drug exposed puppies :(

This made me LOL. Thanks for that. Also those puppies are really freaking adorable.

  • Yes, I knew what they were from researching our trip when we went to Turks and Caicos. They are super cute. I didn't see many there though, but then we didn't get too far from the resort most of the time. The white one in the first picture and the white one in the second picture are sitting kinda funny on their hips, I wonder if that's genetic somehow?

Yeah, it looks like they have hip dysplasia from how they are sitting. I hope not, because they look super sweet.

  • I didn't know they had a name, but I always like hanging out with the dogs when I'm at an island.  They are usually so sweet and really friendly to people.
