help me occupy my crated puppy :(

imageimage" mce_src="image">So our lab has aural hematoma in both of her ears(blood filled pocket). We went to the vet and shes now on antibiotics and they told us to limit her. She is now a miserable crated puppy in our living room. I've been letting her out in small increments to play, but she gets so excited. She can't shake her head or scratch since that is something that causes this/makes it worse. She seems more bothered by it since the vet lanced it and drained it.

I gave her a kong but I forgot to fill it and freeze last night. She goes through it so fast when I don't freeze it. I usually put pumpkin and/or pb with some kibble in there. I've also seen yogurt mentioned on here. What kind of yogurt can I give her? I have vanilla in the fridge right now. Is that ok? She has a rawhide and a few little toys. I'm going to try working on sit/lay while she is in there. Anything else I can do to keep her occupied in her crate?

I plan on taking her for a little walk later on in the day when it isn't so windy. The wind should be dying down today so tomorrow she'll get a morning walk. We have at least 10 days of this with her. I feel so bad. She gives me such a miserable look and cries. My poor puppy.

eta: please excuse the giant pics. I still sick at posting pics.

  • I would toss the rawhide, pick up some antlers and thick bully sticks, and restuff and freeze the kong. Kibble, wet food, pumpkin, pb, plain applesauce are all good fillers.

You could also get a kong wobbler or other food dispensing toy and feed all of her meals to her in that.

I would agree. I'm not a fan of rawhid. I've never had issues keeping dogs in cages w/ peanut butter filled kongs. I would freeze overnight and put in cage during the day. Poor pup, hope it feels better soon.

  • Kong wobblers, everlasting treat balls - go down the toy aisle at the pet store and you'll find lots of interactive treat toys.  I've gotten extra yummy freeze dried treats from the foofoo natural pet store to put in there and get them extra involved in getting it out.  You can also use banana, blueberries, etc in the kongs.  Google kong recipes for variations.  Work on her training - high fives, turning in a circle, going 'under' (between your legs), sit/stays, etc.  Tiring her out mentally is just as efficient as physically.  Good luck!!
  • Thanks ladies. I haven't found a place yet that has antlers. I'll have to keep searching for smaller pet stores. I have a kong wobbler but I think it might be too big for her. Looks like I get to take a trip to Petsmart to find something more her size to occupy her! I didn't think about feeding her out of that. Thanks again!
