that got me to thinking about places closing...

They announced on the radio that they're closing all the Marble Slabs around here. Do you all have those? It's a big ice cream place, where they put the ice cream on a cold marble slab and work the toppings into the ice cream. Then they put it in a big bowl.

The guy on the radio seems to think that ice cream places aren't in high demand like they used to be now that cup cakes and frozen yogurt are big.

Re: s/o KMart

  • We ave a couple.

Baskin Robins takes the ranks over that

but even more popular is a local Ice Cream Shop, Amy's Ice Cream

    Favorite thing about springimageNew Colors
  • Marble Slab was huge here about a decade ago, and yes, they have slightly fizzled out since then.   I'm not sure how many here have closed but a few have over the years.

We still have them, and they do still run local Living Social/Groupon deals sometimes to trigger business, but it's dying.

I really like Marble Slab!    It reminds me of being a teenager and going there after the movies on a hot summer day.

  • they closed all the Baskin Robbins too.

All we have now are those ice cream shops where you help yourself and they weigh it.

  • We have Coldstone Creamery's (which are exactly the same as your Marble Slab description) around. Though they have always been few and far between, so I don't think they have closed any down, they just never started with that many to begin with.

    This!

We DO have a lot of Dairy Queen's around here, too. I can name three just between my house and my parents house (about 8 mile stretch). When I still ate dairy it was one of my favorite places to go when it was hot out. Mmm... S'mores Galore Parfait!

Luckily, I have a super close health food store that sells Tofutti Cuties and So Delicious so I can get my ice cream fix!

  • We had one Marble Slab, but I don't think it lasted more than a few years...three, tops.  We have a shiitton of Coldstones though, but I HATE their ice cream - it's too creamy.

Frozen yogurt shops have popped up like crazy lately though.  I could eat that stuff every. single. day.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • Strangely though, we also still have a DQ or two around, as well as a Baskin Robbins (though I think they are now all combined with Dunkin Donuts, so not a complete stand alone anymore).

  • No Marble Slabs here.  We had a bunch of Coldstone Creameries, but they've started closing down around here.  I only know of one that is still open.  Those frozen yogurt places have popped up EVERYWHERE.  They're good, but they're a fad, so it's a little annoying.

Are those the ones you fill up and they weigh it? They're EVERYWHERE.

Yep.  The market is more than "oversaturated" here.

  • A lot of the Coldstone's I knew of are closing too, and they are headquartered here.  I think the original location is still open, but I don't think they get a lot of business there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it closed.  The only ones I know of that always seem busy are located right next to the movie theaters.
    Anniversary
  • I actually love Coldstone. Their "Cookie Doughn't You Want Some" is frickin' amazing. However there's only one near me, and the ones that were close to me in Houston shut down before I moved. I remember a Marble Slab in TX as well, but haven't seen any here.

We do have multiple yogurt places however!

  • We have ColdStone, and they seemed to explode like maybe 6-8 years ago. I think they oversaturated the market, and some have closed. Also, I thought they were kinda overpriced.

  • We have Coldstone Creamery and Maggie Moos which are similar to what you described.  I think part of the dying interest is the price.  I can buy a whole tub of ice cream for what they charge for a scoop.

  • Nope, never heard of Marble Slab.
