WWYD / Peanut Butter Related

Every child in our state is eligible for WIC to help supplement their food. It isn't even income based.

They made changes to their food list to take off almost everything we would eat that they offered.

My husband said I was a food snob because they changed the peanut butter from 'any brand' to 'store brand'. I told them that we wouldn't use it, so they could just take it off the list of foods we could get - and give it to someone else.

This makes sense to me. We can buy our own JIF brand peanut butter.

Why would I take stuff I'm not going to use or appreciate?

A lot of people take everything they can and then either sell it to other people for less than the store price, or they return it to the store to get cash.

I guess I'd rather be a food snob than try to profit from a program designed to help people get healthy food for their children.

Nevermind.. you can just tell me that I'm right. Stick out tongue

They took off cheese. We no longer get canned kidney beans (A loves those). And.. took off almost all cereal options - now you can get store brand flakes (not frosted), cheerio type (nonflavored) things, bran flake things, etc.. No Chex, no Krispies, no Shredded Wheat, no Kix.. nothing.

We won't get the cereal either.

Now we just use it for lactose free milk products for the two kids.

  • I definitely don't think you should take help you don't need. If you can afford the brand name, you certainly don't need assistance buying store brands. I don't understand how they can afford to offer it to EVERY child. So, if I make 250,000 a year, I can still go get WIC? Why?

ETA: I read this again, and it sounds like it's directed towards you, when it isn't.

  • You aren't a food snob. If you can afford it, go for it.

  • You are right. I know people who would use food stamps and then just throw away the food that they don't eat. It's wasteful and inconsiderate to those who actually would eat the food.

This is what makes me annoyed/upset with Extreme Couponing - the people who buy 40 bags of cat food when they don't have a cat! (And it just sits in their house, when they could donate it to a shelter or something)

P.S. Ala, now I want PB!

  • If you can afford to pay more for anything, why are you accepting WIC?

We're choosing to accept partial WIC. We're on a fixed income.. saving a little money on an available food program gives us more money to spend on our groceries, and then we don't need things like food stamps.

Fair enough - I just didn't know the background.

I'm disabled and have children who are food cripples.

Lactose free milk is like $4/half gallon.

    It's insane.

  • I don't like store brand peanut butter either, I only eat JIF Natural. If I were to accept anything else it would just sit and go to waste, and it seems unfair to take away from people who need/would use it...

    Basically, you're 100% right.

  • It makes me sad that people sell the stuff they don't need back to the stores. There's no way to monitor this so people can't do this?

    Oh, and you're right.
