Which is cheaper?

Refinishing hardwood floors w minor patching or mid line carpet?  I've about had it with our bedroom floor and would carpet to buy some time if refinishing hardwood is really expensive.  We do not want to DIY. And would we pay a lot more because it's just one room?  The rest of our floors are 100% done - we ripped up the nasty carpet in our bedroom the day we closed.

Re: Which is cheaper?

  • I would refinish the hardwood in a heartbeat. Way nicer than carpet, better for resale value, way more hygenic and easy to keep clean....etc.

I don't think having one room redone will be that expensive; call a few local places and get quotes and go with the best one.

I don't know about costs (never had to refinish outside a larger project and I've never put carpet in anything), but if I didn't want to spend the re-finishing money immediately, I'd just buy an area rug to cover all but maybe a foot around the outside rather than putting down carpet.  I'd keep that down until I was ready to spend the money to refinish.  Easier to clean than padded carpet, and at the end, if the rug still looks OK, someone on Craigslist or Freecycle would want it if you didn't.  That way you don't have installation costs for anything, it would be super easy to remove, and nothing goes to a landfill unnecessarily.  Since bedrooms are low-traffic, you could probably get away with a pretty cheap rug (cheaper than carpet?) without it getting too worn looking.

  • I know nothing about the cost but would try the refinishing route first. It the room large?

  • Expensive is a subjective term, but for one room I would think refinishing would be less than $1,000 depending on how pricey things are in your area.
  • Hm I should call and get some quotes.  If we did a rug or carpet it would be jut until I feel like the hassle of refinishing.  I think our room is 16x11 w an odd walk in closet.  I'm sure if I gothis route they will probably also find problems like every other tiny project we've had done :)
