It's not a milestone birthday and will be super casual. We will be having it in the evening with heavy appetizers, cake, and drinks. We will have more men than women. Quite a few of the men are weight lifters or early 20s. They are easy to impress, but they can eat! We will be having it outside with a big bonfire. What would you serve?
Re: Food for DH's birthday
I know it's not heavy apps, but bonfire screams hot dogs to me. So I'd consider hot dogs/brats with a toppings bar. Then again I only go to one bonfire a year and that always has hot dogs.
I'm also going to throw this out there. It's not fancy, but it is hearty and delicious. It's easy to make and holds up well at any temp even cold. It does not taste eggy at all and can be cut into smaller (3 bite) pieces.
Hoagie bake
2 8 oz tubes crescent rolls
1/3 lb sliced salami
1/3 lb sliced pepperoni
1/3 lb deli ham
1/3 lb sliced swiss
1/3 lb sliced provolone
4 eggs beaten and divided
grated parmesan to taste
flatten one tube of crescents into and press into a greased 9X13.
layer salami, pepperoni, and hamover rolls. Top with swiss and provolone.
Brush half the beaten eggs evenly over cheese. Cover with remaining rolls
Brush remaining egg over rolls and sprinkle with parm.
Bake UNcovered at 350 for 25 mins. Bake covered for an additional 20. Let it sit for a few minutes then cut into squares. I made 3 of these for a group of 24 for lunch and there wasn't much leftover.
I made this up at 8 am and put it straight from frig to oven with no additional bake time.
I'm afraid heavy apps would leave the male weight lifters starving. And that means you'll have a rowdier crowd when they drink more.
Would you be open to serving an easy meal? This grilled chicken is divine. (I use the marinade on all cuts of chicken, not just thighs.) Cut the chicken into strips and it's easy for party food. Do a quick salad, oven fries, maybe some grilled veggies, and you're set. I love entertaining with grilled food bc I send the guys outside to cook it while they're all standing around drinking and I can finish preparing the meal in peace inside with the girls
ETA - Add 6's suggestion of brats as well for the guys. Alternately, cut up sausage and cheese is a man-favorite app here.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I think it's all about the interpretation of the term "heavy apps", and I'm assuming you're going that route due to the crowd and being able to accommodate seating and serving for your guests. That being said, this is what I might consider doing some of the things in here:

Thanks everyone! We are going to have people coming and going throughout the night. I thought heavy apps would be a better route than serving a meal at a certain time. We are having wings for sure.
We always have the stuff for brats, hot dogs, and smores. We live in the country and have bonfires at least once per week when the weather is nice.
I found this to be easy and quick, macormik has a seasoning package called baja citrus. I took those chicken strips you get at the market, any brand is fine, washed them and then marinated them in the baja citrus over night, then screwed them and grilled them for chicken on a stick
Other items I did was seasoned veggie kabbobs (cheap and colorful)
sliders (I took the hamburger and added diced pepers and onions to the mix, grilled and then topped with steak sauce)
I think hot dogs are a great idea, and having a topping station makes them more festive. I also like the idea of chilli. That's easy enough to keep warm in a crock pot or two (and tastes great on hot dogs
).
I love this recipe for sausage balls. This page also links to another great sausage ball recipe using Boursin cheese. I also like this recipe for homemade jalapeno poppers using cream cheese, bacon, jalapenos, and crescent roll dough.
