sod vs seed?

We just bought a new home.  The yard is a mud pit.  We have mud on about 1 acre of it.  Weighing the pros and cons of sod and seed.  Anyone for or against either of them?  The mud is clay, a pretty slimy clay.  When it is wet, its like quicksand, when it is dry it is like rock. We have two kids and a neighbor who has a dog that likes to wander onto our lot. We need to get something going...I'm tired of this mud.
Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!

Re: sod vs seed?

  • depends on your budget and how patient you are! if money wasnt an object, i would do sod.

  • Either way I'd talk to someone about what you need to do to prep your soil. A yard that is quicksand when wet and like a rock when dry doesn't sound like a good base for either seed or sod. My guess is you'll need to mix in some topsoil, but ask around with some landscapers.

From what I've read sod is great for the instant gratification, but seed will do better over time. The sod is used to a pristine, well cared for environment of the sod farm and can go through a sort of transplant shock when installed in a new environment. Not to mention the sod should be installed the same day it is cut. If the sod isn't installed or cared for properly it can easily fail and within a few years you'll be back to square one. Seed on the other hand should do better over time, but there is a long waiting period and during that time you need to keep kids and pets off the yard.

We recently did a huge renovation job on our house which did a number to the yard (not to mention we removed a lot of concrete). We opted to have it hydroseeded rather than sodding or seeding ourselves. The decision was made based on the theory that seed will do better over time, but also it was a lot less expensive than going with sod.
