Is it safe to machine wash burlap?

I googled the heck out of this and some sites/blogs say yes on gentle cycle with baking soda or a small amount of detergent only... others say no way, it will wrinkle the fabric and fray the begeezuz out of it..

What say you?

I have about 10 yards that I'd like to de-lint a little bit and maybe soften slightly for table runners, but honestly if it's a super hassle I'll just do without.

  • It will definitely fray, so you have to zig, serge or bind it before washing.

It tends to wrinkle too.  I haven't used it in some time, and I can't remember if there are any great tips for getting wrinkles out or preventing them.

  • The stuff will fray like crazy. I would sew it first and then wash it on gentle. Not sure what burlap is made of off the top of my head, if it's poly or poly blend it won't shrink, but if it's natural fibers it'll shrink a bit, so make it a bit longer than you'd need.
