What does this mean? Tree related.
We just moved into our house in October and usually don't go out the front way so I haven't looked at our tree in the front yard until last week I noticed that a bunch of bark is missing from the upper branches and about 1/2 to 3/4 way up the tree the main trunk part looks like it's been hollowed out like a canoe and there's a giant hole about 3 feet large. It doesn't look right to me, but I know nothing about trees. Do you think it's diseased? What do you do about that? Thanks in advance!

Okay, here's the link to the picture. Let me know if it doesn't work, I haven't used tinypic before http://i40.tinypic.com/34j38d2.jpg. Thank you!
I think you need to call an arborist. It is difficult to see too well with the picture but I can see the bark missing on the side limb and it look like the hole may be damage from woodpeckers or other animals which is usually a sign that your tree is in trouble. You may be able to be treated but you want a professional to look at it to make sure it is not a hazard.
If you live in the Pacific Northwest, make sure he is a Certified Risk Assessor (this credential is not international yet, it is only regional; but it will soon be available everywhere).
