So, it doesn't look like my work will be sending me to Ireland this year. Boo. H and I had hoped to make a vacation out of it. We could still go, of course. We were just hoping that we could have one of the tickets paid for through work.
Now, there's a halfway decent chance that H's job would send him to London in the next few years (he's already been twice in the past 6 years), in which case, I could fly out to Dublin when he's done with work, and he could meet me there for vacation.
So, would you wait and see if that happens and plan for a vacation somewhere else this year? Or would you just go to Ireland since we've both always wanted to go. Financially speaking, we can afford the trip, we'd just have a bit more wiggle room if we had a ticket paid for through work, you know?
Other vacations we are considering: Alaskan cruise, road trip to the East Coast (New York and some other places yet tbd)
Re: Let's talk about my vacation
If it's just a chance in the next few years, I'd plan the trip to Ireland now.
But, I also fully support an East Coast road trip!
I'd just go with him to London and make that the vacay, but I've a) never been there and b) really want to go there.
Maybe you can put together a "Dublin Fund", add a little bit to it when you can, and then see if you can really afford it when the time comes, since you don't actually know when that will be. It might turn out that you have even more funds than you thought and turn out to be a really awesome trip! Or, at least you know for certain you can't afford it this go around and you can add more to the fund for the next opportunity.
I'm probably overthinking this and should say "go for it!"
ETA: I also didn't really make it clear that I meant you should take a vacation somewhere else this year, for sure, then go to Dublin if the opportunity presents itself and you have the extra cash from the Dublin Fund.
This is my thinking as well. Unless you know the trip is a really strong possibility and not just a maybe, then I would go ahead and just plan sooner if you really want to go.
I'm of the mindset that you never know what the future holds so do what you want now, especially when it comes to international travel. You never know when something will happen that keeps you from being able to do big trips like that if you keep putting it off for "one day". I'm an advocate for doing what you want NOW if you have the means.
I second this. I really want to do an East Coast road trip in the neat future myself but if I could afford Ireland, I would do that first.
Yeah, it's hard to say how good the chances are. I'd say they are fairly good. A bunch of people on the team he works on are based in London. There just hasn't been as much in the travel budget as of late. That's likely to change at some point, but I"m not sure when.
We did a London vacation a few years back when he was there for work the last time. We said if/when he was sent again, we'd go to Ireland since it's close.
Anyhow, thanks for the input.
