So excited! DH was dragging his heels on the plan. For what reason I have no idea. Neither of us have time to clean the place like we want and it is such a stress for me to come home and see all the things that I would like to be done. He asked what I wanted for my birthday and I said, "Cleaning lady, please." My birthday wish then became a birthday present.
Anyway, I had a recommendation from a neighborhood friend. She came this AM to look at our place and said will be coming tomorrow for five hours. Dang. DH asked her to come every week. Not sure if we're going to need that, but whatevs. I'm not complaining. I think I might celebrate with a bath in my spanking clean tub this weekend.
For those of you that have someone come in to clean, how often do they come? What types of things do you have them do other than the routine cleaning?
Re: Cleaning lady is coming for the first time tomorrow
I'm really no help...but enjoy her!
And hey if your H is for and you can afford her every week..by all means carry on! Maybe she can use the off week to catch up on more deep cleaning/seasonal projects.
I'd also be sure to have her do the stuff you hate!
5 hours a week is a LOT, unless you have a huge house or she is doing your laundry haha.
I have a house that is 1400 square feet each level - she cleans my upper level only as I work on the lower one and clean that myself. She vacuums the whole house, scrubs the bathrooms(2), mops the floors, dusts and polishes the furniture and my leather chairs, and then she tidies the house by folding towels, fluffling pillows, wiping the counters, etc. She usually also finds time to vacuum my couch and wash my kitchen counters and sink.
I would say if she is coming for 5 hours I would only have her come every 2 weeks or something, but hey, if your DH will pay for it then I guess I wouldn't say anything haha! But for 5 hours I would expect a pretty deep clean of the whole house.
oh, I see.
A cleaning lady is the best money I have ever spent! I felt weird about doing it like others would think I was lazy, etc. for a long time. Now that i finally hired someone I LOVE IT! I am sure you will too, it's amazing.
My cleaning lady also just started making me homemade bread every week and bringing it when she cleans...she is like my personal fairy godmother!
Um, wow.
Haha, I used to babysit her kids. We know each other - she asked a few weeks ago if I wanted any baking as she does baking and sells it to a few people.I said if she did bread I would love some, and she said of course! I pay her extra for the bread.
I didn't hire a stranger and say "Oh by the while while you clean my house I want you to bake me bread!" or anything. LOL.
We had our house professionally cleaned for the first time 2 just weeks ago. I have a health issue that affects my energy andd frequently doesn't leave enough energy for a full cleaning, and not having a clean house was making me crazy. She did an initial first time cleaning which consisted of cleaning pretty much anything that can be cleaned - she dusted everything, vaccumed everything, scrubbed the kitchen and bathrooms, cleaned ceiling fans, fixtures, baseboards, windows, etc. Going forward she's doing a monthly deep clean. Not quite as thorough as the initial clean but still a good cleaning. I wish we could afford her weekly but we can't. The deep clean will allow me to maintain it during the rest of the month. I have to say, the house still feels as clean as it did the first day she cleaned and I've vaccumed once, dusted and done maintenance cleaning in the bathrooms,
Depending on how much time you are paying her for, I would have her vacuum and dust the whole house including furniture, upholstery and maybe even drapes, scrub the shower/tub, disinfect countertops, mop tile surfaces, wipe down baseboards, clean all glass surfaces, disinfect trash can and change the sheets. Enjoy it - it will be awesome!
this is our on-going argument in our house-- DH wants a cleaning lady since I work 3-4 days a week.
We spent a month trying to find someone who was insured & who could 'fit us in' their schedule, I felt like I was BEGGING these people. I thought we were a dream assignment, new house, no kids, no pets, non-smokers.
Every cleaning lady came their list of what they do and don't do and they STARTED AT $45.00 an hour. Most req. an initial cleaning fee that was above and beyond the hourly rate. Really for a new home that is very clean and neat???
It lasted 6 weeks with every other week cleaning, then her mother became ill and she became her FT caretaker.
I can not start that project again, it is easier to do my own cleaning.
Happy birthday and enjoy it!!
Ours comes weekly and has for the past I can't even remember how many years. In this house which is about 2300 sq ft (though we don't use the master suite yet as it is still under renovation) she is here about 4 - 6 hours. She doesn't do laundry but does just about everything else. She has her own routine and unless we have something going on, I don't tell her to do otherwise. Some weeks on top of the regular top to bottom cleaning she cleans out the inside of the fridge, some weeks she adds baseboards, etc...usually whatever she decides needs to be done. I love her and can't imagine my life without her. We keep our house clean on our own but having her weekly is my extra sanity.
Enjoy! It's the best. We have one that comes every other week for about 3-4 hours. We have 2300sf, but not all the rooms are cleaned every time (i.e. guest room, etc.) She will also do deep cleanings, which we had her do before we moved in and that was about 7 hours and she charged by the hour.
Ours come overy other Thursday and they charge $90. Our house is @2300 sq feet and it usually takes them a few hours. They dust, vac, wood floors, clean 2 bathrooms, and the kitchen.
We hired them when I went back to work when my boys were 10 weeks old and it has been a lifesaver. Enjoy it and happy birthday!
Ours comes every 2 weeks for 2.5 hours. We have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms that she cleans + small living room and kitchen. We don't use the 3rd bedroom so I don't have her spend time on it. I haven't had her do anything other than routine cleaning yet.
My biggest advice and our cleaning lady loves us for this - put away all the stuff before she comes. The night before DH and I do a big sweep and get all the toys and random crap put away, counters cleared, and floor generally swept. That way she doesn't have to spend time cleaning around our clutter and we get a better final product.

Huh?! Why?
Ours comes for 3 hours every two weeks, house is about 2400 sf. We don't really use 2/3 bedrooms and don't use one of our bathrooms though so they are pretty light cleaning for her.
We have her do: floors (vacuum/sweep/steam mop), dust, clean surfaces in kitchen, clean bathrooms and that's about it.

Rude.
She's just jealous she doesn't have a cleaning lady! Ignore and delete.
I always use companies - private or national - that have Multi member teams. What takes 1 lady 5 hours will take a team of 2-3 1.5-2 hours.
The company or cleaner should have a list of what they clean every time in every room. They usually have a separate list of areas-items added for deep cleaning that are not normally part of your service.
I will not hire a cleaner that doesn't provide this list because it sets one up for disappointment. You thinking they will clean something that they don't - or one week clean it but not the next.
I have deep cleaning done every 3 months and regular cleaning every other week.
It seems like it's a gift for the household, not a gift for me. I think maintaining house cleaning is a joint effort so it's a gift to "us" not just one person. I get that it's something she has been wanting and I would be happy to be finally getting it and I agree that it's something she'll enjoy...but it's something he'll enjoy too. I just hope she gets something personal as well!
Your comment is still rude and your logic is seriously flawed. Since when are people not allowed to ask for gifts that others may enjoy as well? If I had asked for him to take me to a concert, he would have enjoyed that too. Would that have been "sucky?" If I had asked for a dinner out, he would love that as well. Would that have been "sucky?" One of my girlfriends bought me a mani/pedi out with her. Guess what? She's gonna love that just as much as I will.
None of these are "sucky" gifts. They are AWESOME gifts.
Oh ignore her. She's been a black hole of fun everywhere she goes on the nest for as long as I've "known" her. *waves hi to jenn*
My Goodness...another food blog. Featuring: Macarons from a old post with a photo taken by my mom for a break from my crappy food photos!
do we have history?
To OP...Happy Birthday, I was just hoping you get something to open as well (though this is a gift that keeps on giving as they say).
With the perspective of the concert, I totally get it, I think I was just hypersensitive to "a women's job is to clean"
