Pergo floors or similar?

So we are in the process of buying a house and I am trying to price out some flooring options. Does anyone have any experience with Pergo flooring or other hardwood-like laminate options?

I was leaning towards that vs. real wood because of the cost and I have heard the upkeep on the laminate flooring is much easier.

I'm a newb to decorating, so any advice is appreciated!

Re: Pergo floors or similar?

  • We installed laminate in our previous house and hardwood in our current house.  Honestly, the hardwood wasn't that expensive and it's gorgeous.  Since we plan for this to be our forever home, hardwood made more sense to me because it can be refinished.  Laminate is durable, but of course will eventually show wear, and there's nothing you can do about it except replace it once it has some dents and scratches.  There is very nice looking laminate, but I also just don't think you can beat the beauty of hardwood.

We bought our wood from lumber liquidators, and the price was less than some high end laminates I've seen.  Also, if you are thinking of installing yourself, we have installed both, and wood is 1000 times easier to install than that click together flooring.

  • Oh, and as far as upkeep, for us there has really been no difference between laminate and hardwood.  We clean them both the same way, although we use a different chemical for the wood than we did with laminate.  With hardwood you will eventually have to refinish it, but I would guess that is needed once every 8 - 10 years (not sure since I've never lived in a house with wood floors that long).

ITA with all of this.  We had laminate and I loved it.  Until we had water damage and chose to replace it with solid HW.  Now it'd be hard for me to justify putting money into something that will get scratched and damaged and will have to be ripped out and replaced.
