You would have to remove the finish that is currently on it....there is usually some kind of polyurethane or something on it. Alternately, you could use a gel stain on it without stripping it of its current finish, and you would have to apply a protective coat either way.
The gel stain will show scratches more easily, since it sits on top of the surface and doesn't actually stain the wood. The shelves and changing table that I used it on have held up well, but they don't get the same kind of use and abuse that a table gets.
