DH & I are relocating to the San Diego area. Since our couches have holes, the finish is coming off the coffee tables, and thats about all the furniture we have, we won't be moving much.
We're starting from scratch, and its a little overwhelming. How would you start? Do you start with a picture you find online, your favorite color, a style you like, a fabric you find, a pillow, a painting?
I don't even know where to begin in narrowing down what I love and want.
Re: Starting from scratch...
Starting with a picture is a good place. If there's one photo you just luuuuv, analyze and figure out what elements make it up: wall color, upholstery color, rugs, a dramatic painting, etc. Then go around shopping at stores in your price range for similar items.
To find pics, head to Pinterest and pin pin pin until you notice patterns in the images you love: white walls, blue couches, etc.
Other girls here get inspiration from a pillow or a rug, etc. My brain doesn't work that way :P But if yours does, go for it.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I get my inspiration from anything and everything. I have no control over what will inspire me...when inspiration presents itself, I pay attention.
I do a lot of 'window shopping', both online and irl. When I notice that I am drawn to the same color/style/whatever over and over, I start to get some direction.
Sometimes when you move to a new location, you will find that what worked for you in your old city doesn't work for you because your lifestyle has changed along with your location. Or you adopt some design influences from the new area. I think taking the time to figure it out makes a huge difference, but that's just me. I like a lot of different styles, but have learned that I need to be open and let myself discover the direction rather than try to force a direction.
