How do you clean your windows?

I have tried everything.  The afternoon sun shines in our sliding glass doors and they always look streaky.  I have tried windex, vinegar and water, with paper towels, with coffee filters, off brand windex.....

What do you use that doesn't leave streaks?

  • We use some foam spray DH got when he managed a carwash years ago (he got a case of 12 cans and it's lasted forever).  It's called Sonny's I think.

  • Good post! Everything I try leaves streaks too.

However, I think my problem is life in the sticks. It's dusty all the time. Even my water gets dusty as I'm washing...lol.... so I'm basically swirling dirt around. If it's not that a) it rains 10 minutes later b) or a gust of wind blows dirt on them 20 minutes later.

  • Fish foam is supposed to be amazing according to some blogs I've read.

My dad always used newspaper to clean the windshields b/c it made less streaks.

Yep, same for me, except I'm in the burbs. I suppose I could clean the windows more, or take more time and about a gazillion paper towels, but I just kind of deal with the streaks :). Right now the combo of pollen + rain is not helping the dirty window situation.

  • Bissel glass cleaner, it's a foam.  I also use plain ammonia in a spray bottle diluted with a little water.  Method's mint glass cleaner is also good.
  • Sometimes I use steam and microfiber, sometimes just water and microfiber cloth.  I have one microfiber cloth that is meant to be used with glass....it's really smooth and doesn't leave streaks.

Sometimes I use a window cleaner that I got at Target in the automotive department.  They sell it at automotive stores too...I think the brand is Stoner.  It was recommended by someone who is a car freak so I thought I would try it.  It's pretty good.

  • I casually say, "Gosh, look at the nose prints the dog left on your clean windows," and DH cleans the windows.  He uses a glass cleaner, but I'm not sure of the brand.
  • Lurker coming out of hiding...

Automotive glass cleaner (foamy stuff), wiped with newspaper. That combo has worked better than any other combination I have tried (it never stays too pretty for long because of the doggie noseprints, but oh well!) Be sure to wear gloves--the ink will not come off on the window, but it definitely will stain your hands.

  • Love-- Stoner Invisible Glass cleaner, I wish I found it a decade ago.  It can be found in some grocery stores etc as well as auto. stores.

Once a year we have our (house) exterior power washed and all the windows cleaned inside and out by a widow cleaning company.  It is so worth it, cleaning the house helps keep the windows clean I have noticed.

They are scheduled to come out this week, this is the first time we ever had it done in March !!!???? the weather is amazing this year.

  • SprayWay foam.  Home Depot carries it, but it's way up on a high shelf, above all the big brand stuff.  Our glass shower-door fabricator recommended it.  I wipe it off with either paper towels or a microfiber cloth.
  • SprayWay is the best stuff I've ever used! And about the only one that seems to be streak free and doesn't require a lot of elbow grease. I can find it in my local Mejier.
