How much did it cost to ship your dogs?

We're possibly moving to AK, which is considered overseas, so I'm wondering how much should I expect to pay for ship the dogs. We'll be flying from Fl, possibly GA. They're both probably gonna be around 50lbs by then.

Does the military help in shipping them at all? Some company was looking like 1200 to ship them(SO expensive!) We'd like to drive and do a partial DITY, but with the weather it just doesn't seem safe.

Re: How much did it cost to ship your dogs?

  • I shipped my 20 lb dog and cat from OH to HI for about $700.  We used NorthWest Air, which I think is now Delta, and sent them as cargo.  I think it was cheaper to have them as checked baggage but we weren't able to travel with them.  This was 4 years ago so I'm sure the prices have gone up.  They will also have to be up to date on all vaccines and have a health certificate from the vet filled out within 10 days of air travel.  And if you don't have airline approved crates that is another expense to think about.
  • The military will not pay to move your pets.

Try calling United and get them as checked baggage, that is going to be your cheapest route.  If not United is good about how they charge with cargo.

  • My dog flew on the plane with me, and she was something like $400.  Basically, they treated it like extra baggage that is oversized and over heavy.  I got wildly different quotes depending on who I called.

  • When my dog flew back with us from Japan four years ago it cost $100 (on the Patriot Express) to Seattle, and then the flight to Chicago was about $500 -- so $600 total.

  • unless their policy has changed drastically, Delta should be $200/pet/way as checked baggage. I know a lot of things have been changing, but when we flew home for Christmas in 2010 this is how much it was.
  • This may be a dumb question, but what does it mean if they are "checked baggage"? I haven't flown in years since I was a kid, so I'm not up to date on all the lingo. lol! Thank y'all for all the input, and sorry that I didn't respond very quickly.

It means they are going to go under the plan where baggage goes, with you on the same plan. Each crate will be counted as a piece of luggage.

Cargo is where they are not on the same plan with you or to big to be counted as checked baggage.

Ooh, that makes sense. Thank you!
