Making cabbage rolls first time..have Q

So when the recipe says to core the cabbage just cut the core but how far in?  When it says to scortch it in water how long?  Thanks!!

I usually use a pairing knife to core out the cabbage...usually about 1.5 - 2 inches into the base. I cook the whole head for about 90 seconds before trying to remove the leaves. Take a few off, repeat process.
