WDYT of ombre done on these staircases?

Re: WDYT: Ombre, in a new place?

  • Not a fan. The first one isn't too bad though, just NMS. The second one looks like it was executed poorly. Like someone started coloring the bottom step with a permanent marker and the marker slowly died by the time they got to the fourth step. The third pic looks like the sun bleached it and the other side always had shade.
  • I like the first one alright, not a fan of the second or third ones.  I agree with the comment about the third one looking like it has been faded from the sun.  If I were going to do this, I would do it like in the first picture.  However, if that photo wasn't posted in this specific thread, I wouldn't even have noticed it was ombre.  So I think a bit more variation in the color would make it stand out even more, although maybe it looks better IRL or even on a different monitor than mine.
  • I'm really on the fence about the idea. On the one hand, when I saw a picture recently, I said, "Huh, interesting idea." On the other hand, I can see this being hard to execute so that it looks intentional and well-done.
  • NMS, but I like the look! I definitely think the average DIYer is not going to execute this well and it might be best to just look for it in magazine spreads, kwim?

Otherwise it gets a Yes from me!

  • They all look dirty and faded to me.

Like the steps haven't been touched since 1978 and I need to take a paintbrush and give them a shiny new coat of paint.

  • I love the old, faded feeling of it!  In the right place (ie, not my suburban new build), it'd be a fantastic look.

But I agree with hippie that this could go very wrong when DIY'd by the average Pinner lol.

  • Is that really ombre or just the affect of lighting and shadows? I wouldn't have identified those as ombre.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • I really like it! I have something similar pinned on Pinterest, and I'm thinking about doing it to our stairs.  Our house is decorated sort of country cottage, and I think stairs like this would work well with my style.
  • It just looks faded to me, in a not-kept-up-seedy-old-hotel way.  I don't mind the idea of ombre going up stairs, but none of those seem to hit the right mark to me.  This banister does a better job I think.
