What say you, pce?
The Trayvon Martin case has infuriated people in Florida and throughout the U.S. People believe that the shooter, George Zimmerman, should have been arrested in the teen's death. The New Black Panthers even circulated a Wanted Dead or Alive poster for the shooter.
However, the Sanford Police had an eye-witness to the event, and that witness, known as John, has spoken out about what he saw that night. According to John, Trayvon Martin was on top of George Zimmerman beating him before the shooting.
He said, "The guy on the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling to me: 'help, help'... and I told him to stop and I was calling 911." Police reports say that Zimmerman had blood on his face and grass stains on the back of his red sweater. Could this be why they did not arrest him for the teen's murder? It seems that perhaps this witness and Zimmerman's appearance made them believe his story of self-defense.
This is the first news that Martin attacked Zimmerman, which may make the entire situation seem different. Even so, the unarmed teen did not deserve to die for whatever he was doing unless he was actually trying to kill the man, and since he did not have a gun, it does not seem like Zimmerman was at risk of dying.
What do you think? What does the information that Trayvon Martin attacked George Zimmerman make you think about this situation now? Does it change anything for you?
Re: Eye witness says trayvon attacked zimmerman
If that was indeed true, then certainly its easier to see how it may have escalated to murder.
Regardless, Travyon was unarmed and Zimmerman's history indicates he was just a rascist SOB.
I'm giving this "eyewitness" a major side-eye for now.
Wouldn't the police have mentioned seeing Zimmerman with blood on his face at some point during the last few weeks?
"You don't get to be all puke-face about your kid shooting your undead baby daddy when all you had to do was KEEP HIM IN THE FLUCKING HOUSE, LORI!" - doctorwho
Admitting that I have not followed this case as closely as some, do we have any idea why this information, if accurate, was not released sooner? At the very least I would have thought the police would make some sort of statement indicating that they had evidence beyond what was otherwise publicly known. By itself this doesn't seem to justify killing someone, but it certainly seems to speak to a claim of self-defense, particularly under Florida's lenient law.
I certainly would fight back if someone was trailing me for some time. I mean what was that kid suppose to do??????
It doesn't change Nything for me. You can't claim self defense when you are the follower, outweighs the person, are an adult and victim is a child and you have deadly weapon while the victim is unarmed. None of that says self defense to me.
I am also a bit skeptical of the eyewitness mostly because I have only seen fox news report this.
I would still say self defense for trayvon.
picture it. you're walking home. this random SUV is tailing you slowwwwwwly. finally, big dude gets out and starts to come after you. it's dark out. you tell your GF you're scared. after trying to ditch him and he still finds you again...what do you do?
um yeah....I would say trayvon would have been defending himself. how else was he supposed to have interpreted zimmerman?
The idea that an unarmed college bound teenager with no history of violence was unprovoked and just started randomly beating up an armed man twice his size with a history of violence for shitss and giggles is just so unbelievably incredulous to me that I find anyone who believes it to be true to (or believes it could be true) - at best - lack all logic and reasoning skills and at worst - just be flat out racist.
Even if this "eyewitness" actually exists, and is actually is telling the truth, there is no way what he witnessed tells the whole story.
This is my line of thinking. I thought he tried to run away first? That is exactly what I would do if I were Trayvon. I would try to run, yell for help, and fight off the attacker if I couldn't get away. Isn't that the basics that we teach children when it comes to child abductors?
More than photos, why hasn't his lawyer at least mentioned this? Given the growing international storm over this matter, I would think Zimmerman's attorney would at least indicate that there was some physical evidence of an altercation that had Zimmerman on his back at one point. I realize that evidence can emerge as an investigation continues, but this is something his attorney should have known from the start.
This. It's just more racism. If Trayvon were white, no one would believe it.
All of this is beside the point though. This sounds like a great tactic for Zimmerman's defense at trial. Not a reason not to arrest him in the first place.
Here is the transcript of a voicemail that Zimmerman left for a friend who has been defending him. (the bold section sticks out to me)
everything esf said.
self-odefense must be proportionate to the perceived threat. you can't bring a gun to a fistfight.
SKETCH.
also, about that message he left... he didn't think to offer condolences before he needed the guy's help?
A kid who weighs 140 lbs attacks a man who weighs 250. Riiiiiiiiiiight. I can't imagine a kid who was scared and being followed would choose to attack the man following him WHO WAS CARRYING A GUN instead of getting the fcuk out of there.
And if I was Zimmerman, I would be ashamed to say a short, skinny kid beat my ass.
I'd be more willing to believe Zimmerman broke his own nose to get out of being arrested.
I had this EXACT argument last night on a friend's FB wall with one of her gun nut friends. At one point, I was so angry, my vision grayed out. I thought I was stroking out.
ETA: And where the fcuk are the pictures of Zimmerman with a broken nose, and all bloody? I call a heaping pile of bull feces.
1) this sounds awfully convenient for Zimmerman and the police that this is coming out now.
2) the article doesn't say if the witness saw Trayvon attack Zimmerman first or just saw them fighting. If that's in question how do we know Zimmerman didn't provoke or attack Trayvon first?
Regardless this doesn't change my mind Zimmerman had no business following Trayvon and certainly no cause for shooting Trayvon.
I agree with all of this and find it completely ludicrous to think that there could be any shred of self-defense on Zimmerman's part. He hunted down a child and killed him. If that child tried to fight for his life in the process, no that does not make it self defense.
ditto this. The Stand Your Ground rule would seem to apply to Trayvon here too. Funny how that works.
To me, this just highlights why Zimmerman should have listened to the 911 operator and not gotten involved. He created a terrible situation.
Why are you convinced he acted in self defense? As opposed to merely being open to the possibility?
I am not a lawyer, but according to our local news, the self defense angle wouldn't fly. They said the stand your ground might, but for self defense, the response would have to be proportional to the threat. And killing someone with a gun isn't proportional.
Again, not a lawyer. Just repeating what our news has been saying. I'm interested to hear more analysis.
I heard an interview with GZ's attorney the other night and the attorney said that there was no medical treatment administered to GZ at the scene nor did he go to the hospital for treatment for his supposed bloody/broken nose or cut to his head.
Self-defense of what, exactly? A kid that he outweighed by a hundred pounds fighting back in terror? The same kid he was stalking with a gun? That's not self-defense. That's provoking a situation and then retaliating with extreme force against Trayvon's self-defense.
Taaffe's son died 3 years ago. Why is Zimmerman just now saying he is sorry for his loss. Sounds like someone is trying to do damage control.
