At what point do you purge old linens?
At what point do you decide to purge old linens? I've got a number of old sheet sets and duvet covers that I just don't use anymore, yet I feel guilty throwing them away. I already tried contacting my local animal shelter, but they only take towels, not sheets. Should I just toss them? How do you decide to let go of these old linens?
Re: At what point do you purge old linens?
When they get holes, lol. All of our linens are white so I don't really buy new ones until they get old.
Do you need any extra drop cloths? Does Goodwill take sheets?
If they are in good shape, you can donate them to Goodwill or similar donation places. I just recently donated 3 sets of twin-size pink sheet sets -- they were from my single days (and my single bed) but we only have a king and a queen bed in our house now. Yes, we might have a daughter and a twin-size bed again someday down the line -- but that could be 10 years from now, and I don't want to hang onto sheets I can't use for that long.
If they had holes in them or were otherwise badly worn, I could have cut them into rags for H when he polishes his boots.
Donate them. They can sell that stuff to someone who markets them for use as rags. I can't remember where DH was, but the company he was visiting had big bags of pieces of things like that that they purchased as rags.
Whatever you do, don't throw them away. There are people who can find uses for them. I know a lot of people with dogs who who love to have them to use in the crate or even to cover their crate.
We use old sheets to cover stuff when we paint, to make patterns for costumes, slipcovers, etc, or whatever else comes up.
I either donate to the local animal shelter (esp towels), used for drop cloths (flat sheets) or they become seat covers for the dog (fitted sheets).
If it's a set, then I usually donate to goodwill or whichever place is doing pick-up that week.
Wives Unscripted
I donate them when they start looking faded or I'm tired of them.
Our local church run thrift store takes them. They give the nicer ones to families displaced to extreme circumstances and the old ladies buy the rest for quilting and pillow projects. So I feel good about it.
That and we use old linens to keep baby calves warm in the barn. About once a year H comes in and says, "We're through the sheet/blanket stash in the barn, what do you have for me?" Again another good cause.
