Out of state interview

Is it typically assumed that if a company invites you for an interview that requires long distance travel that they will pay the travel expenses? The email that I received from HR does offer to help with travel arrangements, but does not explicitly say that the company will pay. I know that when my husband was travelling for interviews, his expenses were paid, but I'm not sure if that is the norm. I'm an engineer, if industry plays a role.

Thanks!

Re: Out of state interview

  • Yes.  If it is an out of state candidate unless we say we are not paying, we pay.  FWIW I hire engineers also.

  • When I had to travel for interviews (in-state or out of state), I was first screened (phone interviewed) or in one case the hiring manager travel to my town to meet with me, then they paid the expenses for me to go for the formal or second interview.

The current job I am in, I had to drive 3 hours each way for an interview at my own expense, I was reimbursed for the mileage of the second interview.

Although it is nice to show your negotiating skills, but if you really need a job that bad, you would pay out of your own pocket, don't you. That's how I felt about my last interview, I need to land a job and the position was extremely desireable to me, so I wasn't going to ruin it by arguing for the reimbursment.

ETA: I am an engineer (civil), and generally civil eng companies are not very generous.
