Front Porch Railings - PVC or Metal

have to decide soon on wether to do PVC or the metal/steel

which do you have and do you like it?

Re: Front Porch Railings - PVC or Metal

  • We have the vinyl/pvc for our front porch and love it.  The only maintenence required is a power wash a couple times a year.  We used to have wood and I was dreading the sanding, priming and painting.
  • We have metal railings and I hate it! The fussy, delicate twists don't suit our colonial IMO, and I believe they're less than 10 yrs old but they're already starting to rust. Blech.

  • Everyone here has PVC pretty much due to extreme weather changes in my area.

Wood rots and the paint/stain chips like crazy due to wind and rain.

    Metal rusts super fast here.

I have a SS railing made out of an old pipeline from a dairy barn. It's super fun and weather resistant for the most aprt. However, it is real true industrial grade ss and not just coated. We used it because we had it already and would fit with our house...it'd  cost a fortune to do otherwise.

  • We have metal but it looks like crap.  We plan to upgrade to PVC someday.
  • We have metal stairs and railings as well as a wrought iron fence, we just had to spend $800 to have rust grinded off and refinished.  I don't know if the previous owners didn't do good maintenance or what, but I also know we had issues with our metal balcony at our last apartment.
