Dumb Question re: Bedskirts

We recently purchased a new bed and mattress set. Prior to this we had a platform bed, so we never needed to use a bed skirt.

Here's my dumb question: does the bottom of the bed skirt just graze the floor or is it higher than that?

I ask because if the bottom of the bed skirt needs to graze the floor, I need an 18" skirt which is tough to find. Most of the ones I like seem to be a 16" drop.

Is there a rule I need to follow?

Thanks!

Re: Dumb Question re: Bedskirts

  • Mine is barely above the floor. You can't see under the bed still, but I'm fairly certain the purpose is to hide the box springs, so as long as you've got that covered, you're probably fine.

You can PIP for more opinions, but I'm going to go with "you're fine."

  • We have a super high bed, so I have spent the last 34 years trying out different lengths of bed skirts.

I have come to the conclusion that it depend entirely on the look you want, and the length/style of your quilt/comforter/whatever. It's all about proportion and balance.

  • Thanks for the replies! I figured as long as it covers the box spring it would be ok, but I didn't want it to be like wearing short pants or something!

I also found an option for just a box spring cover - like a pillowcase of sorts I guess. Here's a link if anyone's interested:

That way there are no worries whether or not it's too long or too short!

I've never seen those, but I use a fitted sheet. You get the same look, but probably for cheaper. Just another thought . . .

JMO, but I think the linen cover gives a more finished, more sophisticated look than a fitted sheet.

The sheet is a good idea, and is certainly a step up from seeing the mattress, but I think choice of fabric used could be one of those details that really makes a difference to the total look.

Hmn, this is a good point, too. I like the idea of the texture to the linen. And here I thought my only issue was drop length for the skirt...

  • I used one on my old queen bed, the bed had wooden rails that didn't quite cover the box spring. I have a bigger bed now and found them on the BB&B website for about $40 for king. They have them in textured and a linen look.

Anyway, my point is I loved mine and would totally do it again.

Thanks for the tip - I'll check out BB&B, too.
