Boiling disc?

I am making one of my grandmother's recipes (I'm making gefilte fish for Passover) next week and she recommends using a boiling disc to help keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.  My usual kitchen gadget store doesn't carry them anymore.  I found them online through Lehman's, but does anyone know if any stores carry them?  I'm in Jersey but work in Manhattan.  I've tried Williams Sonoma, which had been recommended to me, but they didn't even know what I was talking about.

Any other stores that might have it?  Or should I just go ahead and order it online?

Re: Boiling disc?

  • Can you post a pic of the one you found online? Have you tried Sur La Table? I don't live near one but when I go in they always seem to have 10x as much stuff as Williams Sonoma.
  • Here's the link to the one I found online

  • i always thought they were just to alert you when it was boiling to avoid a boil-over, not to keep things from sticking.   if it's not sticking you want could you put a bit of oil in the water or use a non-stick pan?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Ok, that is what was coming to mind but I use it for pasta as well so I didn't know if it was different.  Amazon has one (which I know is online but it's free shipping with Prime or probably over $25 if that's what you were trying to avoid).  I bought one that is used the same but is ceramic at Sur La Table. I can't find it on their website but here it is also on Amazon. link

Honestly, I only heard of it because of my grandmother.  But I figure I shouldn't mess with her recipes, I'm going to stick to everything she uses!  So I have no idea what they're actually for, just what she's told me.
