Granite overlay of kitchen countertops?

Has anyone done this?  The house we are looking at has formica countertops.  The cabinets are solid wood, in really great shape, so I wouldn't immediately plan to redo the whole kitchen.  But I would really like to quickly/cheaply upgrade the countertops.  Any price ideas?  Thanks!

Re: Granite overlay of kitchen countertops?

  • I don't know about granite overlay pricing but another thing to consider is the Rustoleum Countertop kits (http://countertops.rustoleumtransformations.com/)

  • we looked at granite overlays but did not like them because of the edges.  the edges are square and to me makes it look cheap

This.  Well, it might not have been the square edges, but whatever it was, there was something about them that made them look 'off'.

  • Thank you!  Glad to hear that before I start getting it all installed in my mind:)  The Rust-Oleum product looks neat, have you used that?
  • I haven't used it but I know there is someone on here who has.  Turned out great

  • We looked into the granite overlay but it was actually going to be more expensive than actual slab granite.  Really, I think it's kind of a scam (at least the place that we checked out).

  • We have these in the place we rent and love them. Ours were done by Granite Transformations. It's crushed granite that is poured into a mold. Very durable and they don't crack. We have pretty expensive taste and don't think they look cheap at all. I don't think they're that much cheaper than actual granite, though.
