Rag quilt makers/flannel users: quality question

Hi everyone... lurker here. I just started making rag quilts (had been doing boring straight-up receiving blankets before that), and I've read a few places that the quality of the fabric makes a huge difference. The only flannel I've ever bought has been from JoAnns.

So, my question is.... do any of you use Joanns flannel, and if so, how does it hold up? And if you don't like it and don't use it, where do you buy your flannel (online, we don't have any places close by where we live now)? And what is a good price point?

Thank you for your help! If I'm going to make a baby quilt, I want it to last!

I don't know anything about rag quilts, but my mom made us a bunch of receiving blankets out of Joann's flannel. We used them well beyond the swaddling stage and they've all been through the washer & dryer umpteen times and have held up quite well.
  • I can't say how long they will last, but I did a couple of rag quilts for Christmas presents. One was with fabric I already had, some Michael Miller cottons and flannels, and the other I went and rushed out and brought some flannels from Joanns. I can say that the Michael Miller fabric was MUCH nicer to sew. The Joanns fabric was ok, but I found I wasn't as happy with the overall quilt.

I can say that the Michael Miller one is holding up well and is used lots :) As far as I know the Joanns one is doing ok too and the little girl loves it :)

  • I saw a few Michael Miller flannels when I was looking online and there are some really cute ones! Where do you buy your fabric, and what is a good price for you? The lowest I could find was around $8.50.. does that sound about right?

Also, have you (or anyone else) made a rag quilt using plain cotton front and flannel on the back? Do they turn out ok? There area a lot of non-flannel prints out there that I really like, but I don't know how well it would turn out. If I had a bigger stash of scraps, I'd test it out, but I just have little ends and pieces right now.

  • Ive brought most of my material from fabric.com. They have sales every now and again so I try and wait until then! There is a 10% off coupon that you can use once though in the coupon corner on the website....

I probably paid around about that. Im not sure if you can get it better than that, I haven't spent a lot of time looking. Im sure if there are quilt shops close by you could look through their clearance stuff. You can do that on fabric.com thinking about it. Def look out for sales and coupons though :) Sign up for their emails!

The one I made with the michael miller fabric was cotton on the front and flannel on the back, and a square of batting in the middle. I like it. It might not be as fluffy (rag bit) or as soft as using flannel on both sides thats all....
