Best places to buy? (flooring, lighting, appliances...)

We are building our own home and are starting to price out all of the elements that go into it.  If you would, please share your experiences on best places to purchase the following things:

Flooring?

Lighting?

Appliances?

Did you order online?  Big box stores like Lowes or HD?  Ikea?  Amazon/Overstock?

Re: Best places to buy? (flooring, lighting, appliances...)

  • When my ILs built, they went to Lowes for most everything because they opened a card with them that got them 1 year, no interest. I want to say that they also went to places like the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for some stuff (like the tile they used in their laundry room backsplash, off hand).

Habitat ReStore a great idea.  I just googled and it looks like there is one in the town next to me, thanks!
  • I shopped the ATG stores for a few things that went into my new home. They have good prices and a massive selection of lighting as well as plumbing fixtures and pretty much anything for the home. Their lighting section is

But you can get to the other areas through that home page.

Overstock has great lighting, depending on what you're looking for and they also carry plumbing and home improvement items.

Our hardwood was through the builder and we bought appliances through our builder as well because they gave us a credit and were cheaper than every place we priced out locally and online, including HD and Lowes.

I got my flooring (engineered hardwood) online from Beckler's carpet outlet. Even with shipping it was dollars of square foot cheaper than lumber liquidators for better quality. Service was excellent. They sent full board samples for free.

ETA: I got my stainless steel French door fridge, front load washer and dryer on Craigslist. Girl was moving in with her boyfriend and had just furnished her house the previous year, boyfriend had all the stuff so I got practically new for super cheap.

  • I bought tile and laminate flooring at a Floor & Decor outlet near me. I also looked at Lumber Liquidators for the laminate.

I wish I'd gone to a Sears outlet for our appliances, but it was kinda a long drive from our house, so I just went to Sears/HD/Lowes. I ended up buying from Sears, just because I liked what they had in the store better. I could've saved a ton at an outlet (usually it's just a dent in the back of the fridge that no one would ever see, stuff like that).

  • Lighting: bellacor.com - it was easier to sort than lighting universe, and they always had the lowest price. They're good with returns too

Plumbing Fixtures & fittings, & Appliances: homeclick.com - again, always the lowest price I could find. I would have bought my appliances from AJ Madison though, but I live in NY and would have had to pay sales tax.

Flooring: I bought from an independent place in Vermont b/c I wanted wide white oak floor boards at a great price. It took ALOT of research and calls, but I found exactly what I wanted at  a price I couldn't believe. And they're reclaimed so I feel xtra good about them
