flooring for open concept
I was looking at photos on houzz.com of open concepts. Every single picture I looked at had one type of flooring that flowed from living room to kitchen to dining. Is that usually preferred? all the pics have hardwood. I am lightly considering open concept but I would want tiling in the kitchen/dining room. Our living room has hardwood flooring.
Re: flooring for open concept
I think continuity of color is more important than the same material throughout.
I agree with you that I want tile in my kitchen (and bathrooms, laundry...). I like the flow that one flooring throughout gives, but I think that can be accomplished through color.
I think it depends on how open it really is. If it's just one big space that happens to have a kitchen, it looks better with one type of flooring IMO. But, if there are some walls, no matter how small, I think you can use different materials.
(My work internet filters suck, so I can't PIP.
I think it's fine. My aunt's kitchen is open to her family room and she has tile in the kitchen and hardwood in the family room.
Using two different flooring options will give you the feel of two separate rooms and one type of flooring will give the feel of just one open space. It depends on what you want.
I'll try to find a good picture of it but our open floor plan has hardwood in the foyer, connected to carpet in the living room which connects to tile (matching color) in the dining room and kitchen.
I had wanted to do wood in the dining room but I'm so glad I didn't now.
