Alternative to Mod Podge

I am having trouble with Mod Podge staying tacky after it dries, even after using thin coats and long drying times. Now with it getting warmer it's getting even worse. I do not want to use a spray sealer on top.

Any suggestions for an alternative adhesive/sealer? I came across Perfect Paper Adhesive, does anyone use this? Thanks!

Re: Alternative to Mod Podge

  • Sanding the item after everything dries helps with the tackiness.  Have you tried that?

  • I haven't tried that, but I have a major project to do and would like to avoid any extra steps if possible.

  • Try watered down Elmers?

I think you might run in to the same problem though. I would recommend using a spray sealer on top of the Mod Podge, I've used this one by Aleene's and I like it, bought it at Michael's. They don't take too long to dry.

ETA Doh... it would help if I read your entire post, ha! I haven't used what you suggested and don't have any other suggestions for ya. Sorry!

  • Why do you not want to seal it?

1 part Elmer's and 1 part water can also be used, but it turns out more cloudy than a clear finish. I always do a coat of clear spray paint or the mod podge seal spray.

  • Throw out your mod podge and get some gel medium!  Semi-gloss or satin finish will do pretty much everything that mod podge does, but it won't stay tacky. It you use matte finish it will get cloudy over dark colors though.

I like Golden Acrylics brand, either regular or soft gel.

I'm trying to keep it non-toxic.
