new to the board and to crochet

Hi everyone! I'm new to the board, but not so new to the nest...I used to be on the knot years ago when I was planning my wedding, but I couldn't remember my screen name for the life of me. I figured I'd just make a fresh start. For a little intro, I'm a 30 something wife with one furbaby...a dog.

I recently started learning to crochet, like 2 days ago, and I've become addicted. I've been using the craftyminx.com website to learn and it's been the best tutorial I've seen so far. At least the easiest for me to follow. I'm half way through the lessons so I've got some of the basic stitches.

Anyway, I'm not too crafty other than some jewelry making so I'm really excited about how I'm picking up the crocheting.

Any basic tips for crocheting? I just did a washcloth type pattern, basically a simple square lol, and at the end it just said to finish up...what does that mean? I assumed weaving the ends back in.

What was one of the first things you made when you started out?

Re: new to the board and to crochet

  • Hi and welcome!

I'm a fairly avid crocheter myself.  I made A LOT of scarves to start out.  Lol.  I then moved onto blankets (just a bigger rectangle...hahaha) and now I'm pretty darn good at reading a pattern, if I do say so myself and I make sweaters, hats, mittens, shawls, baby booties, and all kinds of other stuff.

If you haven't checked out Ravelry.com you should.  Tons of patterns there.  Happy crafting!

"Finishing up" is what you assumed--weaving the ends in, trimming any ends from joined yarns, etc. If it were an afghan or similar, you would "block" the square.

It sounds like you're coming right along, but I LOVED Debbie Stoller's book "Happy Hooker." It's how I learned and there are great patterns in there. Try that if you're in the market for a book!

That's what I figured with the "finish up" direction. Glad I was right! I'll have to look at that book...I am collecting patterns like crazy now. You should see my pinterest!

  • I love to crochet - youtube has some great videos with examples of how to do certain stitches, if you get stuck. It's sometimes easier to watch someone do a complicated stitch than to understand the directions, at least for me - I learned as a child and didn't learn to read patterns till about 5 years ago. :) Ravelry is great, and I, too, have tons of pinterest patterns saved! :)

I'm actually making a baby afghan right now using a youtube video. It's easier to do it that way for me rather than try to read a pattern. Some of the videos have written instructions too so I look at both to understand the patterns better. It's only been like a week so I think I'm doing ok.
