Recommend the best interactive toy for a power chewer.

I need some good toys to keep Molly entertained in the house, something that she has to really work at trying to figure out how to get the kibble out of.

BUT, it has to be incredibly indestructible.  This girl has a black kong that she can actually push closed.  She hasn't broken any pieces off yet, but there are noticeable chew marks.

She just seems so bored all the time.  I play with her a lot, take her on long walks, and we run around outside every potty break.  But she still sulks to her kennel and whiiiiiiines and whimpers when I don't pet her 24/7.

  • The only thing that survives my chewer are black kongs and durable nylabones.  Everything else has been destroyed :(

Thats what I was afraid of.  I'll probably not waste my money unless another pittie owner can testify that something survived.

  • Thank you.  She's super skinny in that picture, she's all nice and fat now.  Well not really, she's just at a healthy weight.  That photo circulated around FB, a friend of a friend had seen someone throw her out of their car :(   So the photo was being shared...I saw it...and I mean really, could I resist?

Here she is recently.  Happy girl!

  • Nylabones are a mainstay in our house.  Antlers also make a regular appearance, but she gets a little too exicted by the antlers and becomes obsessed with them.

I don't really know how indestructible this is, but we've had the Tricky Treat Ball since Harley was a puppy.  She will chew on it, but has never torn it apart - and she likes to pop/tear apart basketballs and soccer balls any chance she gets - so I don't know what it is about this ball that keeps her from destroying it.

The Hurley bone from West Paw has also stood the test of time:

And...the Orbee planet ball lasted a good two years before she started pulling the continents off of it:

I should note that while Harley is a strong chewer, she only has red kongs, and has yet to destroy them, so my recommendations may fall short of your needs.

  • my dog shreds kongs of all colors, but for some reason once he got the feet off a bad cuz and knocked the squeaker loose inside, the ball part has lasted for years.

He wrecks anything that ever had treats in it, so we quit stuffing things and bought a new black kong (so it smells like plastic instead of pb) and that one has lasted. (this is his fourth or fifth black kong)

He munches on those orange chuck 'it balls that come with the big stick thing for throwing them, but they last a few weeks (unlike tennis balls, which last about six minutes).  This is a good thing to have anyway, since the running after the ball is good exercise, and I would get tired if I was just throwing it.

seems to be a combo of trial and error and his whims...

I've also found that sometimes he's just bored, so if I play mind games with him he'll get tired eventually.  I put a ball in a blanket and he digs it out (of course, he does it ridiculously quickly, so you have to do it over and over again...).  Put the blanket on his head and call him until he gets out (which he does super fast the first few times, but the more we do it, the more twisted he gets)... we did have to dedicate a blanket to this use, since the edges got chewed.  I've used cheap plastic cups to hide treats and have him knock them over.  Hidden toys all over the house and had him hunt them down. Of course, these are all things that require your supervision, so it only works if you have free time.

  • We have two bully breed dogs in our house. We feed raw, which is mental and physical exercise on its own.

The only toys that will last in our house are:

GoughNuts-we like these because they have a lifetime warranty. After six months of heavy chewing, we just replaced two of them.

Antlers-The bigger, the better, but we have to make sure they don't chew too long.

Black Kongs-These last for a bit, but are slowly disassembled, rung by rung, by one of our pups.

Raw Rib bones-We don't feed weight bearing bones, but rib bones are a favorite.

Bully Sticks- We get the 12 inch sticks and know that they'll last 5-20 minutes, tops.

We also do a lot of mental stimulation and training to tire them out.

  • We give our Doberman raw shank bones.  It takes him about 3-4 hours to get all the marrow out of the center, then he chews it after each meal. They're hard and good for cleaning their teeth.  Looks like this: http://www.grassfedtraditions.com/images/marrow%20bones.jpg

He's usually really destructive and can chew through toys in a matter of minutes, but his red kong has lasted 3 months so far so other than the raw bones, I have no clue lol.

Go big.  Get the biggest black kong you can find.  You might also be able to orde blue kongs (not the blue/white puppy kongs).  Big was the key in our house though.  If duke couldn't get his mouth around something, he couldn't destroy it.
