tips for teaching an old hunting dog about a wireless electric fence

Hi we just purchased a new home without a fence. While we hope to fence it in the next year or so we just dont have the time this year while renovating one of our other homes. I purchased a PetSafe Wireless (2) Dog Collars Fence Containment System PIF-300. I used it before at one point when I didnt have a fence so one of our dogs should remember and be fine with some basic training. I am worried about my dh's dog who is an older brittney spaniel. We dont have much info on him but he came to us with no training at all. Thankfully he is very smart and housebroke within a week. What I am afraid of is that he will be afraid to go outside after the first time he gets shocked or just not be able to wrap is head around the fact that he cant see a boundry. I would put a stake in the yard with a chain (just for him to go out for potty time) but we have children running everywhere and I am afraid someone will get caught in it. Ideas to make it easier on him? anyone run into this? The move alone is hard on him. I hate adding this to it.

Re: tips for teaching an old hunting dog about a wireless electric fence

  • Return the fence and only let him out when you can be out there with him while he's on a long leash.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Most of us aren't big underground fence fans - they're just not reliable in most cases.
  • My family and I have been using wireless fences for years. They work great as long as the dog is properly trained to understand it and is not left unattended until then. TRain really slow. When we first got one I trained my older Golden Retriever. It took him longer to understand than it did the puppies. Put the dog on leash, take them up to the line and let it beep and call them off. When they come treat them. Use lots of treats through the whole process! Make it so that it is not scary at all. As the dog gets used to it they will back off as soon as they hear the initial beep.Make sure the dog is comfortable knowing how they are supposed to react before the first "shock".

Just remember wireless fences don't keep other dogs out!. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I wish I could but between feeding the baby and getting my older child off to school in the morning. walking two dogs for 30 min in the morning just isnt practical. The temp fence is only for them to go out and do their business not to leave them out for long periods.
