US Soccer and the Olympics

Can someone explain to me how this works?  Is there a tournament to decide who gets to play in the Olympics?  So not every country gets to enter a team?  I'm confused.

Re: US Soccer and the Olympics

  • There are qualifying matches for each confederation in FIFA.  CONCACAF is the one the US belongs to and there are only 2 berths to the Olympics out of the 40 member associations.

In group play, the US beat Cuba 6-0 and lost 0-2 to Canada.  That gave them an aggregate score of 3 (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss), which meant it needed to beat El Salvador to have enough points in the aggregate to advance to the semi finals.

  • Oh ok.  Thanks for that explanation.  I had no idea it was so complicated to just GET a team to the Olympics from a country.
