He's a 4 month old Chihuahua who came to the shelter as a stray. He's got both ears but is missing his right eye. He's all black with white on his chest and is about 6 lbs. He was so sweet and timid with my daughter. You can tell he hasn't been loved because he cowered away when I would put my hand close to him to pet him. He just stood there and shook until I picked him up and held him close.
I have thought about him all night. He has to stay to get neutered so they said they would call the day of his surgery so I can pick him up the next day.
I feel like I am becoming a mom all over again! We were thinking of naming him Ojito (O-HE-TOE) which means one eye in spanish.
I post this on ML and they suggested coming here to read your FAQs but I would love any breed specific tips you have.

I thank sarahtoledo for my chi love
Aww, so sweet. Thanks for adopting!
Our girl, though not a chi, was very fearful when we first adopted her (and still is to a certain extent). My best advice would be to let him have plenty of time to warm up to you, your family, and your home. Let him explore on his own and try not to overwhelm him with attention and all that at first. Be sure to post some pics when you get him home!
ETA: Oops, I called him a girl. Fixed
This- as a shelter volunteer, I can't thank you enough for a dopting a dog 'with issues'. It will take time. But just have patience!
Have you bought a crate yet? Do you know where you'll keep him in your house? Do you know what type of food they fed him at the shelter? Any time I bring a rescued dog home, I always ask for a sample of what they were being fed, so I can mix that in with whatever new food I'm going to feed. I add cooked white rice too. It helps with the transition process of switching foods.
Also, I've never had a dog that small before, so this idea is not coming from personal experience, just a thought. Maybe make sure the dog wears a sweater? Not sure wher eyou live, or the temps you're currently experiencing, but I've read that little dogs like Chihuahuas get colder easier since they don't have much fur.
Good luck! Keep us updated when you bring him home!
