Broken puppy tooth. Does he need to go to the vet?

My 4 mo old puppy broke a tooth (it's a lower canine) and also pulled out one of the top front teeth.  I know he's at the stage where puppy teeth start to fall out, so I'm not concerned about the front tooth that is missing.  It looks like the entire tooth came out.

The other tooth broke far enough down that I can see the root (it's red down the center, so I'm assuming the root?).  It was bleeding last night.  I gave him some ice to soothe it and the bleeding stopped.

Do I have to be concerned since it will be falling out soon anyway?  It doesn't really seem to bother him now (he seemed a little out of it last night when it happened).  He's eating fine and it's no longer bleeding. It is pretty sharp, but will probably wear smooth from chewing on toys.

We think it broke when he jumped up and grabbed my son's jeans up by the pocket and either he didn't let go or it got caught when he came down.  My son heard a rip sound, but his jeans aren't torn so it was probably the tooth.

This dog is one thing after another!

Thanks for reading all of my new puppy-mom posts :)

Re: Broken puppy tooth. Does he need to go to the vet?

  • I'd call your vet.  I wouldn't want it to get infected or anything like that, not sure how likely that is, just what I would be concerned about.
  • Ditto - I would call the vet.  T broke 2 of his teeth (we think on a Nylabone), and even though he didn't show any pain, the vet said it was probably incredibly painful (the root was also showing).  The vet also told us that if the tooth was allowed to sit there and decay, it could cause an infection in his gums (which could potentially spread elsewhere).  None of that happened, but we spotted it pretty quickly, and T had to have both teeth extracted.

  • I would be worried about it abscessing. I also think it probably does hurt, so I would definitely take him to the vet. They might want to pull it now to avoid infection.

  • Thanks.  I guess we'll call.  He's been in to the vet about every other week since we've had him!  At least he's on antibiotics right now for a bladder infection, so hopefully the tooth won't end up infected.

I think this puppy is costing us more than my son did when he was a baby.

I totally understand. When we first adopted our guy, we were at the vet all the time it seemed. First, he had mange, worms, fleas, and a secondary skin infection. It took a good 4 or 5 visits to make sure the mange was resolved. Then there was an eye thing. Then there was a histiocytoma. Then this, then that.

It can be frustrating, but he has certainly blossomed since.

I'm glad he's doing okay!  My puppy's issues seem like nothing compared to that.

  • We moved up his neuter to next Thursday and will get his tooth pulled at the same time.  He's on antibiotics through Friday this week, so hopefully that will prevent infection long enough to have it pulled next week.

Of course if he shows signs of it hurting we'll get him in sooner.
